The book doesn’t go beyond high school graduation but presumably most people coming t I suspect most people have a memory / feeling of that moment when they are dreaming and the austere sensation hits where their dream shifts into something more sinister. Looks like someone hasn't gotten over his high school years, especially when he can claim to have gone to school with one of the most famous serial killers out there. Jeff's parents are too consumed with their marital strife to notice his problems; his unstable mother eventually abandons him. This book shows a more detailed insight into Jeff's psyche as he slowly loses his mind, eventually becoming a full-blown case of this.

That 2002 Eisner-nominated one-shot was a perverse twist on autobio comix — an exorcism of Derf's pent-up, creeped out memories about Dahmer's terrible, potentially fate-sealing formative years. Attention Whore: What Lloyd Figg, with all his Ax-Crazy antics (though no doubt a troubled kid with serious issues 'upstairs') likely turned out to be.Instead of taking a look at the offending items, and making a grisly discovery, the cops gave Jeff a sobriety test and a citation for drifting over the centre line. In fact, near the end of this book the author admits while he was visiting his hometown/having a mini-reunion with some old high school buddies there were jokes exchanged about “Dahmer probably being a serial killer by now” .

My Friend Dahmer (Abrams Comic Arts, 2012) is the culmination of a comic book project first started in 1994, shortly after Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered in prison. He was the guy behind the coolest comic strip in the paper, The City, which ripped on Cleveland every week but also seemed to celebrate its crazy residents at the same time. He attended Eastview Junior High and Revere High School, where one of his classmates was future serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. I can tell that Backderf went out of his way to as truthfully as possible share this story that was close to him using the medium he was most comfortable with.

And, in the prologue he talks about how this story was the result of many years of reflection on his years with Dahmer, not something he rushed to get on the shelves ASAP once the story broke. There's nothing about his picture that would lead you to believe he would be capable of such violence. I didn't necessarily expect to find myself feeling sympathetic towards Dahmer, his backstory is surprisingly very sad.

I would occasionally see him at company parties, quietly watching from the back, this tall dude with a long face who usually seemed pissed at something. A few days later, the police stop Dahmer in the middle of the night as he is attempting to dispose of the dismembered body—but the police officer fails to inquire further and lets him off, causing him to cry with relief. Derf, while not excusing or forgiving Dahmer's crimes, presents an empathetic portrait of Dahmer as a lonely young man tormented by inner demons, ridiculed by bullies at school, and neglected by the adults in his life. An Aesop: If someone shows signs of distress or mental illness, intervene as soon as possible or those problems will get worse.

During the ride to the mall, a shocked Derf witnesses Dahmer drink a six-pack of beer in under ten minutes. When recounting an incident where a kid fell and landed on his shoulder near Jeff, Derf notes that the latter was very much this. Backderf also disagrees with the requirement that students should receive counseling after reading the book. These are the stories where there may have been a chance to stop the horrors of the future if things were slightly different or if someone had stepped in - but no one ever did . I was willing to hang out with him at school, but there was no way I was going to forge a closer friendship.
