The QN90B’s maximum picture brightness measured on a 10% white window in Dynamic mode was in the 2,000 nits range – way more than enough to deliver the goods with most HDR content. Other measurements showed input lag with a 4K test signal generator to be an excellent 9.8ms (milliseconds) and 12ms with a 1080p source, both in Game mode. The QN90B is a second gen Neo QLED Mini LED TV, and it’s another exceptionally bright effort that boasts wide-ranging colours. I do think, however, there’s a case to be made that too much brightness is not always a great thing. The 50QN90A’s connections are all built into the TV rather than integrated into an external One Connect box of the sort provided with Samsung’s flagship TVs. They’re still plentiful, though, including four HDMIs, three USBs and the usual wi-fi and Bluetooth options. One of the HDMIs supports eARC, for passing lossless Dolby Atmos audio out to a suitably capable soundbar or AVR, while HDMI 4 supports the latest gaming features of 4K at 120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). That remote carries more buttons but is still practical enough to control if you’ve got small enough fingers to press the smaller buttons. The smart remote is the less cluttered option for those who don’t like to be assaulted with buttons they’ll never use. It also comes with a solar panel that absorbs ambient light to charge itself or can be charged via USB-C.

That pricing puts it in among the LG OLED55C2, Philips 55OLED807 and Sony XR-55A75K as competing options. Design When it comes to gaming the QN90B is not as all-consuming as the LG C2’s feature set but you’re still getting a tremendous number of features whether you’re a console or PC gamer. I measured latency at 10.1ms – faster than the LG C2 (13.1ms) – and with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) that can drop down to neglible amounts. These talents make the 50QN90A a seriously compelling gaming display too, despite the set having to rein in some of its contrast and colour enhancement technologies to deliver its exceptionally low 9.2ms (at 60Hz) input lag time when running in its Game picture mode. Overall, the Samsung QE55QN90B’s performance is a colourful one that’s well-suited to bright rooms, but that level of brightness can overwhelm. Samsung QN90B (QE55QN90B) Review: Brightness to the max

The only notable app absentee is Freeview Play – though Samsung does support the separate catch up apps of all of the key UK terrestrial broadcasters. As with the other Samsung Neo QLED TVs we’ve tested recently, the 50QN90A’s mini LED lighting is a revelation when it comes to the sort of contrast we can expect from an LCD TV. What’s more, despite the sophistication of its processing engine and lighting system, the QE50QN90B manages to get the time it takes to render images in its Game mode down to a hugely impressive 9.6ms (with 1080p/60Hz signals). Samsung’s Game Bar does, though, provide the option to sacrifice a bit of screen response speed in return for better, processing-assisted picture quality, along with other game-related adjustments such as the ability to raise the brightness of dark areas without impacting the rest of the picture so that you can more easily see enemies lurking in the dark.Apart from its screen being smaller, the Samsung QN50QN90B's picture specifications are close enough to those of the previously tested QN95B 4K flagship TV to make differences nigh on impossible to spot. Sat head-on, there’s slight blooming to night-time scenes like the opening of the She-Hulk episode Ribbit and Rip It. I can see a slight haze surrounding the lights in the car park as Leapfrog tries (and fails) to take on a couple of robbers. Move off-axis and the blooming becomes more noticeable. For the most part the 50QN90A’s speakers give a strong account of themselves. Instantly noticeable versus typical TV sound systems is how far the sound spreads beyond the boundaries of the TV’s frame, and how rounded the sound is, with a decent amount of bass depth to underpin and counterbalance the reasonably open midrange and clean treble. Joining the 50QN90A’s terrific contrast is some exceptionally high brightness for a small screen when showing full-screen bright HDR images. Only Sony is capable of getting even brighter than the 50QN90A in the mid-range/small screen market when it comes to the most intense HDR content – but those Sony sets don’t have Mini LED lighting on hand to keep dark scenes free of blooming. Experience shows, though, that blooming issues with local dimming LCD TVs are typically much more pervasive and consistently distracting than the QN50QN90B's occasionally obvious dimming activities, so it’s hard to argue with the logic of Samsung’s approach. Even though the brand does also want to have its cake and eat it, to some extent, by making the QN50QN90B exceptionally bright with light HDR images. As stated above, the QN90B series features Samsung’s Neo Quantum processor 4K. It supports the HDR10, HLG and HDR10+ high dynamic range formats, along with HGiG ( HDR Gaming Interest Group), but, as with past Samsung sets, Dolby Vision HDR has been left out in the cold.

While the QE50QN90B joins other Samsung 2022 smart TVs in excelling on content quantity, though, it also labours under the same unhelpful new interface design. This can be sluggish when the TV is first switched on, can be confusing to navigate, and has a tendency to highlight content most people won’t actually be interested in. Apart from its screen being smaller, the Samsung QE50QN90B’s picture specifications are close enough to those of the previously tested QN95B 4K flagship TV to make differences nigh on impossible to spot.
