The changes to the front grip may be subtle, but it's more secure and keeps your hand positioned further up the camera for additional stability. The thumb grip is substantial and is positioned to keep you from accidentally pressing buttons. The E-M10 Mark IV also features the Super OVF mode, which as the name suggests simulates an optical finder, offering an "unprocessed" view of the scene in front of you. Olympus has included its trademark scene (SCN) and Art Filter modes, which function as you might imagine, placing 'creative' looks over images. We're not huge fans, but they can be fun to have a play with. We're more keen on the Advanced Photo (AP) section of the mode dial. The 5-axis image stabilization was even more impressive when we tried out the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV’s video functionality, providing smooth footage when walking with the camera handheld. The E-M10 Mark IV is the first camera in the OMD series to feature a flip-down LCD monitor, which makes capturing self-facing vlogging footage super simple. This screen is also particularly helpful when photographing high- or low-angle photos. Arguably more likely than the PEN F II is the release of another E or E-PL (PEN-Lite) camera. The resurrection of E-P line in 2021 (in the form of the Olympus PEN E-P7) somewhat threw the future of the E-PL into question –though the E-P7 wasn't released in the US, where small EVF-free cameras have traditionally been a harder sell for the company.

Just like its predecessor, the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV is incredibly lightweight and compact. However, Olympus has managed to shave 27g off the Mark IV, making it even more portable. The trade-off with a light camera tends to come down to the body material used to construct it. The Mark IV is made out of plastic, compared to the metal body of more expensive cameras, such as the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III. Looking through that list, you'll see that the E-M10 is essentially an un-weather-sealed E-M5 but with a better rear screen and the ability to easily send images off to a smart device. And, in use, that's a pretty accurate way of looking at things. But just looking at what's new or different risks downplaying how much is carried over from the E-M5. Pushing the camera’s ISO sensitivity to its limits, the results were usable, although details begin looking smudged past ISO 6400 when viewed at 100%. The ability to take better pictures in low light is further supported by the camera’s five-axis in-body image stabilization. This manages to keep images sharp when shooting handheld as slow as 1/8th of a second, which is a significant advantage for dimly lit scenes.There’s a good number of white balance presets and customisable options for more specific balancing. As well as the ability to manually set a Kelvin adjustment, there are four easily accessible slots for custom WB. This can be set by photographing a white card and applying the calculated WB. If we had any criticisms, it would be that we’d love to see a mic port to go along with the 4K video capabilities and flip down screen. However, this would likely start to step on the toes of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 line, so we can understand why Olympus didn’t include this on their entry-level camera. The automatic white balance and metering systems give a good account of themselves, delivering the colours and exposures that you’d expect in any given situation.

Moving on, the ART position on the dial lets you apply a selection of 15 different filters: you can choose from Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale Light and Colour, Light Tone, Grainy Film, Pin Hole, Diorama (Miniature), Cross Process, Gentle Sepia, Dramatic Tone, Key Line and Watercolour, Vintage, Partial Colour and new to the Mark III over its predecessor, Bleach Bypass. Each of these has two or more options, bringing the effective total of effects to 30. Pressing the OK button lets you access the main 15, while pushing the button to the left of the power switch presents access to all 30. While shooting raw and creating a video afterwards on your PC gives you more control over grading, sharpening etc., the in-camera option is nice to have when shooting JPEG or raw+JPEG, as it is obviously much faster. Auto ISO behaves differently in Auto mode than it does in the P/A/S/M modes. In Auto mode, the camera biases toward reducing motion blur. Thus it uses faster shutter speeds, which require higher ISOs. In P/A/S/M modes, keeping the ISO low is the priority, so you'll get much slower shutter speeds risking blur from subject movement.
