About this deal

While masking is employed by many autistic people, people in marginalized groups, including women, people of color and LGBTQ+ people might feel even more compelled to camouflage their disability. I’m near the end of the second chapter and I’ve decided to abandon this book. It’s too infuriating for me to continue on. This is not what I expected and definitely not what I needed. Upon reflection I think the author made it clear what the book was about but I wanted to believe it was about something else, that is, masking/unmasking. Again, it’s not like the author is wrong in pointing out the preference people who look like me have been given. But I’m still here, too, still in pain, and still trying to figure all this out. Do I not count anymore?

Ich empfehle dieses Buch jedem, der sich in sozialen Situationen schon einmal angepasst oder verstellt hat (Masking). It's also so repetitive! and there's a lot of speculation and hearsay "I talked to an autistic this, I heard from an autistic that" instead of Statistically or science based evidences ! I was cool with it at first but when it's a whole "PHD" is based on talking to a "a few" cases It got annoying. I am astounded by how much I've come to understand about myself and my oddities because of this book. It makes me less judgmental and more appreciative about all my perceived faults (the ways I'm different from "normal" people). Further, while the documentation is *near* normal at about 20% of the overall text, it is still on the low side, particularly relative to actively ignoring such a large part of the Autism Experience. (Normal range for documentation in my thousands-of-ARCs-in-5-years experience is 20-33% or so, and particularly well documented books - generally with less controversial and more holistic narratives - can get upwards of 40%.) Epically awful book by a nonclinical psychologist who use personal experience to make broad claims about a complex condition; Falsely attributes symptoms of comorbid conditions as symptoms of autism; and fails to point the reader to any solid empirical research.

Everything that is good about my life was waiting for me on the other side of knowing that I'm autistic, and I have "Unmasking Autism" to thank. I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who thinks they're autistic, because here's the thing: people who don't have autism don't have a lingering suspicion that they're autistic. Can socialize, but primarily in shallow, superficial ways that may seem like a performance. Struggles to form deeper friendships. Ultimately, I got about two-thirds into the book and couldn’t finish. Which is rare for me, to not finish a book.

I think I expected (or perhaps just wanted) something slightly more academically-focused on the phenomenon of masking that I could throw in the face of everyone in my academic psych department, but the format instead is more like "you're probably reading this because you think you might be a masked neurodivergent person, or you love someone who is, so here are a few citations of evidence about this chapte However, as a late diagnosed (43), straight white male, this book felt like it was definitely NOT written for me. Nor does it seem to want to include someone like me in the overall representation. Those who embrace a more ABA approach to Autism may be most likely to struggle with "Unmasking Autism" as it's clear Dr. Price sees ABA as part of the enforced masking journey. If there's a weakness in the book, perhaps, it's that Dr. Price never really delves into this issue more fully and it's an area that deserves deeper exploration. maybe i can explain it from my issue with the subtitle: “Discovering the new faces of neurodiversity” — “Discover” sounds like some weird colonizer mentality, and none of the “faces” are new, they’ve just been cast out, murdered, institutionalized, imprisoned, etc.
