Since these methods involve treating each bump, a procedure may require more than one session. If you have many large bumps, additional treatment may be necessary every 3 to 6 weeks until the bumps disappear. New bumps may appear as the existing ones heal. Prescribed medications for molluscum contagiosum

Removal of the papules could cause scarring. There could be side effects or reactions to medicines that your healthcare provider prescribes. Make sure you tell your provider all of the medicines you currently take to avoid interactions with new medicine. Talk to your provider about the side effects of the medicine they recommend. How soon after treatment will I feel better?Molluscum contagiosum is a self-limiting infection which typically resolves itself within 6 – 12 months but may take as long as 4 years. However, certain cases can take far longer to resolve, and patients are often highly embarrassed about their condition 2. Diagnosing molluscum contagiosum

since more often than not a person would have been very anxious about what was going on ‘down there’. Then, to make things even better they’re told that the infection will clear up on its own. Marvellous, they think. However, in the same breath the doctor will add ‘within about 18 months’. During this time as some spots heal others appear, and so on, until the MC is a thing of the past. On mucous membranes (for example mouth or genital region),open wounds or skin which has been scratched open. Most cases areself-limitingwith resolution of lesions occurring over 6-9 months, although some cases may last for up to four years. Where possible the parents of such children should be encouraged to let the condition run its natural courseKeep the molluscum bumps clean and covered to prevent yourself or others from touching them and spreading the virus. But is most common in children up to the age of 14. In the UK, it is most common between the ages of one and four years, with at least one in 20 children affected at any one time. Children with eczema are particularly vulnerable, possibly because their skin barrier is disrupted (making it easier for the virus to take hold) and because eczema triggers scratching, which spreads the infection.

The lesions average 2mm to 5mm in size and are usually painless but may become itchy, inflamed, red and swollen. The papules are usually small, raised and usually white, pink or flesh-coloured with a central depression. When the core is expressed it produces a white, cheesy material. The patient does not usually experience systemic symptoms, such as fever, nausea, or malaise 1. Molluscum contagiosum mainly affects infants and young children under the age of 10 years. It is more prevalent in warm climates than cool ones, and in overcrowded environments. Adolescents and adults are less often infected. Jansen et al. (2007) 4 also conducted a study of 21 children to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of 5% potassium hydroxide (i.e. MolluDab®) applied twice daily on each lesion until a clinically visible inflammatory reaction was apparent. The authors confirmed the effectiveness and tolerability of potassium hydroxide with the added benefit of patient and parent compliance and simple application, making it suitable for home treatment. Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a poxvirus, the molluscum contagiosum virus. There are at least 4 viral subtypes.Molluscum contagiosum thrives under warm and damp conditions, so keep the skin clean and dry. Try and avoid sharing the affected person's towels, clothing, facecloths, bed linen and toys to avoid spreading the condition. Using topical creams or ointments: Topical creams and ointments speed up your recovery time and reduce symptoms. Topical medicine could include podophyllum, potassium hydroxide, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin. Imiquimod cream. (Prescribed occasionally by skin specialists, particularly in people who have problems with their immune system.) Removing the papules: Your provider could use different therapies to remove visible signs of the condition from your skin by freezing the papule ( cryotherapy), scraping out the papule (curettage) or using a laser to remove it (laser therapy). Don’t try to remove your papules on your own; your provider will safely remove them. van der Wouden JC, van der Sande R, Kruithof EJ, Sollie A, van Suijlekom-Smit LW, Koning S.
