About this deal

Another tamper from the well known coffee gear brand Motta, but this one has a slightly different shaped handle, maybe one to try if you haven't got on with more standard handle shapes. The tampers that come with many espresso machines are at best questionable. If you’re only going to be using a pressurized basket, then that might not be a problem. But if you want to make legit espresso, then you need a better tamper for more precision and repeatability. Here are a few variables to remember: Our coffee tamper is the perfect espresso accessory tool for aspiring home baristas and busy cafes alike. When you press down on the tamper, you'll get a consistent balance without worrying about tipping. Many people get something known as upgradeitis quite early on in the home barista journey and spend large amounts of money on seemingly more important bits of kit, namely on upgrading their espresso machine. Another calibrated tamper, which possibly isn't actually calibrated as such, but has a stiff spring which is designed to help your tamping to be more consistent.

The Luxhaus is about as bare-bones as the best espresso tampers get without skimping on quality metal or meticulous construction, as evidenced by its perfectly balanced handle and base. The handle's conical shape accommodates a range of hand sizes and grips, and at just shy of 14 ounces, this tamper is hefty enough to get the job done with or without a leveler. Maybe you have massive sausage fingers and need a tamper handle the size of a rolling pin, or maybe you have slightly more dainty hands? If you're looking for bigger jumps in your home espresso game, though, once you've got yourself a better tamper, the next thing I'd consider is the grinder situation. Another pro 58mm tamper from shop coffee, and I'm including this one in particular because, well, you don't see many baby pink coffee tampers! Smaller sizes like 53 mm and 51 mm are also VERY common, especially, with cheaper models from companies such as Breville and Delonghi.

I quite like the look of this tamper from DeLonghi, and I have got one somewhere but I can't find where I've put it… It has a replaceable base, which is handy if you accidentally drop the tamper and get a dent in that crucial tamping surface that must be smooth. Maybe Motta are concerned that if they call it a “Ball Tamper” rather than a “Bubble Tamper”, some members of the public will take this literally, misunderstanding what it is you're supposed to be squishing with this thing, which is, of course, ground coffee beans.I really like the look of these tampers – again I quite like the flared shape of the top of the base, the bit where you'll rest your thumb and forefinger.

By providing Authority to Leave you agree that the parcel is deemed to have been received when left at your premises. This is another great deal from Shop Coffee, as this is a really well known brand, who produce some decent stuff, and this tamper is cheaper than some of the other non-branded (or branded with unknown brand names) tampers. This one is has a similar shaped handle to the Edesia tamper above, but a slightly more standard shaped base – and comes with a tamper mat, for the tamper to sit in. Is the tamper calibrated? Some are, and some are not. What this term entails is that there is a slight gap between the handle and head of a tamper. The appropriate amount of pressure closes the gap. This is super-helpful for new baristas because it indicates precisely the right touch with the portafilter and tamper. One of which is the simple and inexpensive action of improving their tamper and some of the others are equally as easy and similar in terms of cost! Remember, you could also brush your hair with your toothbrush, but you probably wouldn't? Each to their own! ;-). Some of the Best WDT Tools I can't find the one I bought for the DeLonghi Dedica espresso machine I reviewed a while ago, but I can remember that I was quite impressed with the tamper in terms of look and feel.
