About this deal

I had to reread a few portions of the book so I knew what was going on, so don’t feel too bad if it’s a bit over your head—pay attention to everything! From the acclaimed author of The Gone-Away World - an adventure story, a war story, and a love story, all wound into one brilliant narrative that runs like clockwork. Katie had finally reported him to the police after he’d stolen money from her bag during a family event. I also enjoy when a book has many characters since it can make a story so much more intriguing when it is written well which this novel certainly was.

Recommended for those who like to think a little bit about what they are reading and want something a little left field. The thing I enjoyed the most about the characters was the relationship between them and how it developed (Mother-daughter and siblings especially). Joe soon finds himself the most wanted man in Britain and, with a somewhat motley crew – including a woman slipping towards the end of her eighties who might just be the only person alive who knows exactly what’s going on – he confronts the forces of the mighty Shem Shem Tsien, International Bastard of Mystery, in an attempt to save the world.

With Joe’s once-quiet world suddenly overrun by mad monks, psychopathic serial killers, scientific geniuses and threats to the future of conscious life in the universe, he realizes that the only way to survive is to muster the courage to fight, help Edie complete a mission she abandoned years ago and pick up his father’s old gun . At nearly 500 pages, it's hefty and densely packed, so it took me a while to read — this is not the sort of book I zip through, despite wanting to know what happens next. With an INTRICATE plot, and a large cast of (evil) characters, it took awhile for me to figure out who was who, and how they fit together in the larger scheme of things, which slowed the pace down a bit.Of course, he knew he was going to be murdered because everything that happens in life is preordained. I was warned of this going in from some other excellent early reviews, and at first, I didn't feel burdened.

Angelmaker will certainly make it on my short list of best adult fiction for the year (which, perhaps, would be more convincing if I read more adult fiction, but it is an impressive book regardless). The last time Katie saw him he was still struggling with addiction, and he stole money from her purse. The book made it seem that the nutjob serial kill was in fact some prophet with supernatural abilities. Edie Banister (ex superspy) is a fantastic draw and her tale, telling the past as well as the present is very good and boys own stuff. I appreciate the opportunity to provide my opinion and look forward to seeing what North comes up with next.
