The distillery was built in 1949 and was originally owned by the Monymusk Sugar Factory which began operations back in 1901. As it turns out, this preliminary step yields no smoking gun – no specific branded rums are listed as Jamaican overproof or variations on the term. The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers.

I can see how this is a quintessential Jamaican rum, it has funk, it has kick, but it’s not a complete beast compared to the likes of, let’s say, Rum Fire. Jamaican rum styles favour a natural fermentation method, lending to a characteristic ‘funk’ in many famous examples. The reason why I chose the Monymusk OP to go against the godlike Wray is because they are both pot and column distillate blends unlike the other two which are pot still only – so I thought it would be interesting to compare. The Monymusk rums are made at the Clarendon Distillers Limited which is located on the Monymusk Estate in Lionel Town, Clarendon. You’ll find the Worthy Park Estate deep in the heart of Lluidas Vale, surrounded by mountain ranges and lush and fertile terrain.Today’s Tiki bartenders revel in using these rums, but the recipes of the classic Tiki canon — as uncovered by Jeff “Beachbum” Berry and others — don’t use them.

Wray and Nephew is made from a blend of pot and column still rums, and has a strong flavour profile that is characterized by notes of ripe banana, pineapple, and spice. Having reviewed two Beachcomber rum lists (1937, 1941) and the Mai Kai’s alcohol purchase records from the late 1950s, no Jamaican proof white or white proof rums are to be found. There are also a large proportion of pot-stills in use in the Jamaican rum industry, giving the rums a fuller body and more robust profile than those from other islands.You can tell the difference - Appleton White is a light-bodied rum that is brilliantly clear and exceptionally smooth with a light fruity bouquest with delicate pear and apple notes. Today’s example: while analyzing the rums used during Tiki’s “golden era” during the writing of Minimalist Tiki I realized that no classic Tiki recipes used unaged Jamaican overproof rum—as we know it today.
