Description

It is about seeing other astronauts "cut in line" in front of you, and helping them in their projects and prospects. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. In our everyday lives it makes a difference to whether or not something works out as well as it should, in space it could be the difference between coming home alive or ending lives in an inferno. Something frustrating happened at work the other — a “something” that continually resurfaces again and again and again. Hadfield most recently served as Commander of the International Space Station, where, while conducting a record-setting number of scientific experiments and overseeing an emergency spacewalk, he gained worldwide acclaim for his breathtaking photographs and educational videos about life in space.

There is a lot of rocket talk, and talk about what it is like to live without gravity on a space station. Many astronauts, myself included, crave spicy foods after a while, because the congestion that comes with weightlessness means that things taste pretty much the way they do when you have a head cold.

Essentially a long dad-like lecture on how the lessons Chris Hadfield has absorbed from a life in pursuit of the goal of going to space can be applied to your ordinary life here on Earth. But his vivid and refreshing insights in this book will teach you how to think like an astronaut, and will completely change the way you view life on Earth – especially your own.

In reality, a lot of that space is taken up by cargo and gear that’s been lashed down and secured for launch. The ISS is a one-million-pound spaceship that’s the size of a football field, including the end zones, and boasts a full acre of solar panels. If you, like me, are not one of the 536 people (November 2013) who have been into space but dreamed of being an astronaut (Poor eyesight blew it for me, at least that's what I tell myself) or wondered what it would be like to be an astronaut then this is about as close as you are going to get. I was excited he talked about filming videos aboard the ISS and how he went viral, because I recognized several of the videos he’d talked about that I’ve already seen myself. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. He shows more of his philosophy in regards to manners later on in the book, where he explains the difference between a 'Plus One', 'Zero' and 'Minus One' type of person. He was CAPCOM for 25 Shuttle launches and served as Director of NASA Operations in Star City, Russia from 2001-2003, Chief of Robotics at the Johnson Space Center in Houston from 2003-2006, and Chief of International Space Station Operations from 2006-2008. I often cite this book as one of my favourites (I am fascinated by humans being/living in space) and it is one I reread when the mood takes me. Later, you hang the towel on a clip so the moisture is absorbed back into the air and, along with urine, can be recycled as water.

It is so refreshing to read about Hadfield's lifelong dedication and commitment to achieve his boyhood aspirations. He tells us how he dealt with all the formidable challenges to prove himself capable of joining the elite group of men and women who are capable of moving a few billion dollars (roubles) worth of highly complex technical equipment in to orbit around our planet with just a few hundred tons of highly explosive fuel to get them there. He does tell us a great deal but, like Horizon programmes, it could all have been said in less time. That’s helpful in zero gravity, where there’s nothing to prevent the hem of your pants from migrating well north of your ankle.
