L-theanine is responsible for increasing alpha brain wave activity, which in turn promotes relaxation. When combined with the stimulant caffeine, it induces a feeling of alert relaxation and increased focus over a longer period, compared to caffeine alone. This is because the effects of caffeine are being moderated by L-theanine. Matcha tea contains caffeine but it works synergistically with L-theanine, which gives that wonderful boost but without the side-effects. So, no jitters, anxiety or heart palpitations.
