As Innes reached the landing at the top of the stairs, she turned to face Briony a few steps below. Her choppy brown fringe fell across her forehead, masking her eyes. Briony had come here ready to tell the truth about them. But the truth was messy and complicated, and she knew the press wouldn’t care about that. They wanted a splashy headline, a brutal story. Victim or victor. Hero or villain. Today, Briony Thorburn would show the world just how villainous her family really was.” Yesterday’s events at the Champions Pillar have shown the citizens of Ilvernath that this year’s tournament will not be fought safely beyond the Blood Veil.

If I'm going to die either way, I'd rather be a casualty in a good story than a terrible one. And that's what I want for you, too. A good story.” The whole tournament literally had me on the edge of my seat. The plot barrelled along at the perfect pace, having plenty to keep you going but a lot to keep you guessing and rolling with the twists and turns. I loved it all! It took the reader to places I don’t think any of us were expecting but it was done masterfully. As she recounted all of this, Briony watched Innes’s expression, hoping for respect, or at least understanding. But her face didn’t change at all. Once again this story doesn’t pull any punches, delivering the hardest one of all at an unexpected moment and the ending was delivered beautifully, painfully and perfectly in tune with the series. Ilvernath has never had a tournament like this. Rules that have maintained the curse for centuries are breaking. Our family needs to know why.”

During the day: If you have a flexible schedule, you may find it helpful to take breaks during the day to read a book. Having devoured All of Us Villains by Christine Herman and Amanda Foody last year, All of Our Demise became one of my most anticipated reads of this year. I was so excited to read it and I’m sad, having finished it, that this duology is now finished. I really enjoyed both books and love the world Herman and Foody created - a dark, twisted, magical spin on The Hunger Games. 4.5 rounded up Again, we've multiple POVs, and we get too understand more behind our favourite morally grey characters' motives. While I do love all the characters, and grew to care for them even more in this second book, I found myself leaning more towards Alistair Lowe and Isobel Macaslan, and thoroughly enjoying their parts - as I had in book one, too.

MAY THE BEST VILLAIN WIN The final book in the New York Times& USA Today bestselling YA fantasy duology, co-authored with C. L. Herman. Nuanced, exceptionally well-drawn characters and a carefully considered mythology’ Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

All of Our Demise by C. L.. Herman, Amanda Foody - Waterstones

I totally fell for All Of Us Villains when it came out last year, and had extremely high expectations for this 2nd book. Yes, I’m demanding, but to my utter relief Foody and Herman totally delivered! This duology has been compared to The Hunger Games--with magic--and while that's not off-base, I felt it was so much more. Ilvernath is one town that has what no other has--high magic. The question becomes, at what price? For the first time in this ancient, bloodstained story, the tournament is breaking. The boundaries between the city of Ilvernath and the arena have fallen. Reporters swarm the historic battlegrounds. A dead boy now lives again. And a new champion has entered the fray, one who seeks to break the curse for good… no matter how many lives are sacrificed in the process. Every single character in this book is morally grey, and sometimes downright villainous, but when you are doing wrong for what could ultimately be a good reason, how wrong can it be. How far is too far to go before you cross that point of no return.... Once upon a time, I wrote about All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody and Christine Lynn Herman that it definitely belongs to the category of books “to devour” and now I want to say that its sequel All of Our Demise belongs there too. I went into this book pretty hyped and it did not disappoint. All of that changed one year ago, when an anonymously authored book catapulted Ilvernath into the international spotlight. As the curse teeters closer and closer to collapse, the surviving champions each face a choice: dismantle the tournament piece by piece, or fight to the death as this story always intended.
