Even when there are lovely moments I am left unmoved, annoyed due to the histrionics, the caricatures, the constant coincidences, the stereotypes.

This has been a real treat of a read that I have limited myself to a chapter here and there each evening, for this really is a book worth savouring. stars (Generously I will say that this is 20 percent of the book) and the remaining 80 percent I will give a charitable 1. Vivid and memorable are the scenes in which the man giving up the caretaker's job, who planted and loves the garden, gently instructs her, and when she's at work in the garden. This is a beautifully written story of tragic loss and grief, but it is tempered by friendship and beautiful memories and love. She began life as an orphan, made a bad marriage at a young age, has experienced an unspeakable personal tragedy and has only 2 close friends. A heartwarming depiction of unexpected connection and the poetry of everyday life, Perrin’s beautifully observed story of a cemetery caretaker coming to terms with the loss of her daughter combines gentle humour with emotional insight to wondrous effect. It isn’t that Violette isn’t warm or compassionate: reflecting on the demands of her strange job, which include assisting and often comforting those who come to bury or visit their loved ones in the cemetery she oversees, she says “for a woman like me, not feeling compassion would be like being an astronaut, a surgeon, a volcanologist, or a geneticist. parcel with no stamp, no addressee, while the administrative forms were filled in, declaring my departure prior to my arrival. Her life is lived to the predictable rhythms of the often funny, always moving confidences that casual mourners, regular visitors, and sundry colleagues share with her.

Valérie Perrin gives us something a little different here while exploring grief and loss by using a cemetery as the setting.her circumstances, history, people she meets, her gifts, or even too much about her charming unique character). Julien’s arrival at the cemetery is the instigating incident for much of the novel’s present-day plot; the story of Julien’s mother Irène becomes an almost co-equal part of the novel, woven through Violette’s narrative by the inclusion of Irène’s diary. Planting, sorting seedlings, pricking out, positioning stakes, hoeing, weeding, taking cuttings, tidying the avenues, both of us leaning toward the earth, hands in the earth, all the time. Perrin odkrywa kolejne karty, robi to niespiesznie, ociąga się nawet, sennie mrużąc oczy i od czasu do czasu spoglądając w przeszłość.
