Description

If you notice small, pink, cauliflower-like bumps on your dog’s lips, it could be canine oral papillomatosis, also known as warts. They come from the dog version of the HPV virus that gives human’s warts. Oral papillomas or warts are usually found on the lips, gums, tongue, and roof of the mouth and usually don’t need any treatment. Just as trauma can affect the inside of the mouth, the lips are susceptible to traumatic injury. Like wounds inside of the mouth, lip wounds can also become infected.

Like with people, even with the best at-home dental care, dogs require regular professional dental cleaning under anesthesia.Brachycephalic breeds. These dogs have small squashed noses that make them prone to gum disease. That’s because these dogs can suffer from overcrowding in their small mouths, trapping food and causing a buildup of bacteria. Pugs, Shih Tzus, Boston Terriers, and English Bulldogs are all examples of brachycephalic (or flat-faced) breeds. Inflammation can affect a dog’s lips directly but it can also occur in the skin folds between the lips. Inflammation of the skin between the lip folds is termed lip fold dermatitis. This chronic inflammatory condition is more common in breeds with prominent, droopy lip folds such as Bulldogs, Mastiffs, and Saint Bernards. These breeds can also develop secondary skin infection due to yeast and bacteria. Symptoms of Chronic Mouth Inflammation and Ulcers in Dogs It’s worth noting that some dog breeds have more pronounced or noticeable lips than others. Breeds like Bloodhounds, Basset Hounds, and Boxers are known for their droopy lips, which can make them look sad or gloomy, but also serve a practical purpose in keeping their mouths clean. The Anatomy of Dog Lips However, it's important to note that dogs do not smile in the same way that humans do. A dog's facial expressions are primarily related to their mood and body language, rather than an intentional attempt to convey a specific emotion or message. Additionally, dogs do not have the same muscles in their faces that humans do, which means that their ability to create a true smile is limited.

There are many potential types and causes of canine mouth ulceration and inflammation but we will focus on the most common ones. Chronic Ulcerative Stomatitis in Dogs Cutaneous papillomas – These appear more frequently as single growths in older dogs. They are indistinguishable from other types of warts. Be consistent - Make sure you’re consistent. If you give your dog mixed messages then it will be confusing to them. Be consistent and clear about what you want them to do and what you don’t If you suspect any of these diseases in your dog, please take them to the vet. They can assess the problem and provide any necessary treatment. 5. Your Dog Has Mouth Pain

If your dog is young and they develop a smooth red lump just beside their lip, this may well be a histiocytoma. These growths affect dogs that are less than six years of age. Oftentimes, a histiocytoma will disappear within a few months, without us having to intervene. While the warts may look unsightly and painful, they pose no harm to the victim. However, some bumps may be more serious, such as skin cancer or an abscess caused by an infection.
