This optional module is designed to offer students a retrieval position where the collaborative tasks specified in a particular module make it impossible for those learning outcomes to be met, such as where there are extenuating circumstances or a failure.

Assessment of this project is based on your ability to apply yourself to a given task and your ability to discuss and demonstrate practical and creative solutions to the production challenges. With only eight places available each year, our training offers you a substantial amount of personal attention from our experienced practictioners who are experts in their field, and you’ll be treated as a professional from day one. RDW Scenery Construction have served the TV, Film, Theatre and Entertainment Industries for 40 years producing high quality scenery. Our large workshop in Park Royal, West London enables our Clients to see their scenery come to life before delivery and installation on location or studio. In class, you will be introduced to the business environments, structures, models and hierarchies that exist within the theatre, events and performance related industries. Our Set Design and Production programme aims to provide you with creative, technical and professional skills relevant to developing a career in the creative industries. Highly practical and industry-focused, the programme embraces a multi-skilled approach to the development of design methodologies and construction methods.

Become industry-ready with this intensive course focusing on practical, professional experience with some of the biggest names in UK set construction. At your interview, the panel will ask you about your previous experiences and your interests and hobbies and they will also want to discuss your portfolio and your response to the tasks (below). For example, when studying trends in contemporary theatre we’ll take you to see some shows, and when we’re looking at period styles we’ll take you to galleries and museums to look at examples. The training will principally be in theatre, but these skills are widely transferable to many different media environments including theatre, film, television, events and advertising. Costume construction applicants should consider the potential costume makes and how they might create these. This role could lead to further engagement and continued career development onto becoming a fully skilled Scenic Carpenter/ Metalwork Fabricator. If you have good basic practical skills in woodwork and are keen to work on large scale projects this could be a great alternative to Higher Education or other vocational formal training. As you engage with these projects or productions, you will continue to develop your understanding of the sustainability agenda and work within appropriate Health & Safety and other regulatory frameworks. The bulk of this course, which is the only one of its kind in the UK, consists of nine six-week work placements – four of which will be held at the College. The other five will take place externally with our professional partners, which are some of the largest and most prestigious companies from the TV, film and theatrical industries in Wales and the UK. You will build specific elements of scenery, working to a professional designer’s specifications and working closely with technicians to plan how scenery might be rigged to fit within either a studio or a main house space.
