Your Volkswagen car is fitted with an advanced emissions control system, which helps your vehicle meet the latest Euro 6 exhaust gas regulations. How does the system work?

The AdBlue® trademark is currently owned by the German Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA), who ensure quality standards are maintained in accordance with ISO 22241 specifications: Modern diesel emission systems incorporate technology that is designed to clean up the exhaust emissions as the exhaust gasses pass through the exhaust. One of the most popular systems uses a Urea solution, like AdBlue®, that is injected into the exhaust before the Catalytic convertor to convert the Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) coming out of the engine into Nitrogen and water. When these systems fail the engine will initially fall into “limp mode” and if not corrected, eventually the vehicle OBD system may prevent the vehicle starting. Part of the diagnostic routine for these SCR (AdBlue® injection) systems is to measure the pressure in the system both electronically (via the OBD diagnostic software) and dynamically using pressure test gauges. The Laser 8060 provides the gauge and connection pipes required to allow the user to directly measure the system pressure at the injector (dosing module) or pump.ISO 22241-2 specifies test methods required for determining the quality characteristics of the diesel exhaust fluid. SCR systems are part of the engine powertrain configuration, and contaminants or impurities in the AdBlue®/DEF could cause the SCR system to malfunction or fail. Thus, it is important to maintain quality standards as characterized in the ISO 22241-1 standard. Intertek provides a full range of prompt AdBlue®/DEF testing and analysis conforming to industry standards. Modern diesel engines run with a lean fuel to air ratio, which reduces un-burnt fuel being sent out the exhaust. However, this also means that the heavy air laden mixture containing predominantly nitrogen at high temperatures of combustion can form NOx. The size of the AdBlue® tank fitted to your car will vary depending on which Volkswagen model you have, therefore the interval between top-ups will vary. In addition, many factors such as mileage, journey type, driving style and environmental conditions can influence how much AdBlue® is consumed. A passenger car can consume approximately 1.5 litres of AdBlue® every 620 miles (1.0–1.5 litres for the Passat and Passat Estate). The chart below details the AdBlue® tank size and location for all Volkswagen models that use SCR. How will I know if the system needs topping-up?

I would need the VIN for your vehicle as those codes are missing the prefix letter. I have tried using a 'P' in front which are usually powertrain codes, but this is not returning anything for several Blue HDi engines - only petrol engines. The additive has been full or partially topped up, but the resetting of the additive counter failed or was not completed correctly. The engine ECU therefore thinks the original amount of fluid is in there and not the new quantity. In this scenario it is not so concerning, as at least there is fluid in the tank - so the pump won't run dry. The worst that can happen is the low additive level warning may come on earlier than expected.
